Isaiah 33:2

Scripture Explained · Pairs with New Beginnings

“LORD, be gracious to us. We have waited for You. Be our strength every morning, our salvation also in the time of trouble.”

Isaiah 33:2 · World English Bible

What it meant then

Judah is staring down a violent, treaty-breaking oppressor when this verse is spoken (see the previous verse, 33:1, where the enemy's own broken word is named outright). Facing that kind of threat, the people's recorded response here is a plain, direct appeal to God rather than a counter-strategy or a deal struck with the aggressor. Waiting for God, in this setting, describes people who stayed loyal through a long, frightening stretch of uncertainty instead of striking a bargain with the very thing threatening them.

The request for strength “every morning” asks for renewal each day, not one dramatic rescue. It reads like a prayer built to be prayed again and again, every time trouble returns, rather than a once-for-all appeal.

What Matthew Henry wrote

Of this prayer, Matthew Henry wrote: “Those who by faith humbly wait for God, shall find him gracious to them; as the day, so let the strength be. If God leaves us to ourselves any morning, we are undone; we must every morning commit ourselves to Him, and go forth in His strength to do the work of the day.”

Matthew Henry, Concise Commentary, on Isaiah 33:2
