Isaiah 40:31

Scripture Explained · Pairs with New Beginnings

“But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.”

Isaiah 40:31 · World English Bible

What it meant then

To the people Isaiah is writing for, these words meant that exhaustion would not have the final say. The chapter opens with exiles who have just said, “My way is hidden from the LORD” (40:27), convinced God had lost track of them entirely. Isaiah's answer points to scale: the God who measured the oceans in the hollow of His hand (40:12) never grows tired (40:28), and that same endurance gets shared with everyone who waits on Him.

Notice the order of the three verbs: mount up, run, walk. The list moves from the most dramatic image toward the plainest one. Soaring like an eagle is thrilling to picture. Walking without fainting is the daily, unglamorous part, and probably the harder one to believe a promise actually covers.

What Billy Graham wrote

Graham wrote directly on this verse: “They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles … So gain the strength of eagles, as the prophet suggested.”

“Set a time each day when you can spend a few minutes alone with God.”

Billy Graham, “Wait Upon the Lord,” on Isaiah 40:31
