Proverbs 3:5-6

Scripture Explained · Pairs with New Beginnings

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

Proverbs 3:5-6 · World English Bible

What it meant then

Proverbs opens as a father’s address to his son (see 1:8), advice meant to be lived out rather than filed away, and this couplet sits right at the front of that address, before any of the specific counsel about work or money or relationships that fills the rest of the book. Before anything else, the son is told where wisdom actually begins.

“Lean” is a word for putting your full weight on something and trusting it to hold you up. The proverb treats human reasoning as too light a thing to rest your whole weight on, next to trusting the LORD Himself directly. “Acknowledge Him in all your ways” carries that trust out of feeling and into daily practice, bringing even small, ordinary decisions into the open before God.

What Hannah Whitall Smith wrote

In The Christian's Secret of a Happy Life, Hannah Whitall Smith described the moment she stopped trying to manage her own spiritual life by her own understanding, and simply surrendered it:

“I have tried in every way I could think of to manage myself, and to make myself what I know I ought to be, but have always failed. Now I give it up to thee.”
