Psalm 126:3
Scripture Explained · Pairs with New Beginnings
“The LORD has done great things for us, and we are glad.”
Psalm 126:3 · World English Bible
What it meant then
Whoever first sang this line had likely spent real years in exile in Babylon, cut off from Jerusalem, before actually walking home again. Psalm 126 opens by remembering “when the LORD brought back those who returned to Zion” (verse 1), and the joy in it reads less like poetic flourish and more like people who still could hardly believe their own good fortune.
The psalm says roughly the same thing again in the verses around this one, which in Hebrew poetry was a way of insisting on something rather than stating it a single time and moving on. Repeating it was the point: this happened, and we are still glad about it, and saying so once wasn't going to be enough.
