Psalm 40:3

Scripture Explained · Pairs with New Beginnings

“He has put a new song in my mouth, even praise to our God. Many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.”

Psalm 40:3 · World English Bible

What it meant then

Picture someone stuck in mud thick enough to trap a person standing still, unable to climb out under their own strength. That is the image one verse earlier: David describes being hauled up “out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay” (verse 2). The song in verse 3 comes directly out of that rescue, sung loud enough for others to hear and be affected by it, testimony as much as worship.

“New song” turns up at several key moments across the Psalms, and again much later in Revelation. Each time it marks something God has just done that the existing songs were not written to cover, so a new one gets composed rather than an old one recycled. The old songs stay. This one simply gets added to them.

What Maria Woodworth-Etter wrote

Woodworth-Etter, who saw thousands converted in her decades of revival meetings across America, wrote of the praise those meetings stirred: “Praise the Lord for his wonderful goodness in revealing his word and will in such a wonderful way, to such a poor weak worm of the dust.”
